Top 10 Office Essentials For Digital Nomads & Freelancers - Part 2

Top 10 Office Essentials For Digital Nomads & Freelancers - Part 2

August 04, 2017 0 Comments

Here comes the second part of my (mobile) office essentials for entrepreneurs, freelancers and digital nomads.

If you have missed the first part, make sure to check it out here.

All these tools have been selected based on 2 main, essential criteria: a) they need to comfortably fit in my laptop 'city' backpack by Samsonite, which is my smallest backpack, and b) they need to make my life easier.

My model actually looks slightly different, but this one is more functional.

So, here are my next 5 picks!

Universal Travel Adapter

Pretty basic one, I hear you say!

There are a lot of options on the market. Most of them are that kind of all-in-one compact models with the bayonet settings sliding out of the device. I've tried a lot of models and ditched them all, because most of the time they're just plain annoying to use (the thingy gets stuck in or out) and they might even not have all the options you need.

THIS, however, has been my loyal companion from Switzerland through Malta to Ecuador and has never let me down. You can disassemble it and only take the piece you need with you, leaving the rest at home (just make sure you don't forget or lose the other pieces!).

Ultra-travel friendly, even if just from home to your coworking office. It comes with a nice case, so you can also store it safely in your bag.

Guess what color is mine? Yes, blue.

 Extension Cable

How many times have you arrived at your favorite coffee shop and sat down at the perfect spot, only to realize your laptop battery was 3 seconds away from being completely drained? You turned around, and the closest socket was all the way across the room, a dude endlessly scrolling up and down his phone holding the spot?

As much as I hope you're better organized than me, there's always a chance to run out of battery in the most inconvenient moments. With this compact extension cable, 1, 2 or 5 meters long, you'll be better equipped to face this kind of emergencies.

Wait – there are sockets close to your desk, but they're all taken? If you're feeling brave, you can opt for this extension cable, which boasts 2 plugs instead of one. Ask your neighbors to share their space and offer them one of your plugs! Now everyone's happy. #sharingiscaring

These are for the UK, but you get the idea – browse and get what's best for you.
If you're in Italy, like me, you could opt for this one.

Sun-Powered Battery Charger

When you are out and about for hours on end, you rely on your phone to handle business. Too bad your phone usually doesn't make it to the end of the day.

Solar battery chargers can be life-savers. I used to have one (yes, in blue) until a couple of months ago, but it ended up at the bottom the sea during a rather rough boat trip.

I've been scouting all different options for replacement, and these two look like the best shots: this ultra-portable one, which might come in handy on my next boat trip, since it's waterproof and impact-resistant; and this foldable one, which also looks very promising albeit a bit bulkier.

I've just ordered the first one and will see how it works in a few days.

Portable Router

I also used to have my portable modem, but to be honest I have no idea where it's ended up. Lately I've started using an older iPhone with a local SIM card, usually only data, to create a hotspot in case the Internet connection goes down. (which unfortunately happens way too often here)

However, it's getting slower and slower and I've just ordered this one to make sure I have a good quality replacement right in time. It's ultra-light, compact and it's a power bank, too!

Kindle... and Bluetooth Speaker

You're right, there should be 5 items only on this list. But I love these 2 so much, I decided to throw them together under number 5. After all, I am my own boss! Read on :)

a) Kindle

I used to HATE people who couldn't even get away from a screen to read a book! Until I was gifted a Kindle Paper a few Christmases ago. Oh my God, what a beautiful piece of technology. It's not really a screen – it's more like looking at real paper, there's not backlight, PLUS it's environmentally and travel friendly!

My Kindle would probably be considered prehistoric these days, but I would still recommend you get a paper-like device rather than a Kindle Fire. Give your eyes a rest!

Get yours here – available in white or black.

b) Bluetooth Speaker

A portable speaker is a great tool for many reasons. You can work to the rhythm of your favorite tracks, listen to a podcast while you run some chores, or blast your music to fight your neighbor's trashy playlist. It happens to the best of us.

When it comes to portable speakers, I used to own some random cheap device. Completely useless most of the time, yet I wasn't (and am not) ready to spend 100s of € into a proper one.

But then, one day, my wonderful client sent me their Barricade speaker along with their Method Wireless earphones, and now I'm totally hooked!

This speaker is impact-resistant, buoyant, waterproof and can be immersed up to 1 meter, has incredibly powerful bass and REALLY makes some noise. On top of it, it's equipped with a strap to easily carry it along, and is available in 3 different sizes – within a very reasonable price range!

I once forgot my Barricade at a beach bar. The next day we went around that area with a boat, I jumped off and swam all the way to the shore to pick it back up. The guys looked at me puzzled and asked, How are you going to bring it back now?!

They watched in disbelief as I threw the speaker in the sea and just started swimming back to the boat, simply dragging it along with the strap.

Trust me, you NEED one of these. Get the Mini version, pick the medium size or go extra large with the XL.

OK, that's a wrap-up for today. What are your essentials and favorite tools for the office?
